Founded in 1820 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, Campbelltown is located 53 kilometres southwest of Sydney. It covers an area of 312 kilometres extending from Glenfiled in the north, Menangle Park in the south, the hills in the west and the Georges River in the east.
The city was named after the Governor Lachlan’s wife Elizabeth Campbell. The city is known for its cultural and educational facilities that include Campbelltown Arts Centre and the University of Western Sydney Campbelltown campus, two TAFE colleges and private and government schools.
Initially this area was inhabited by the Tharawal people. The area was later on taken over by Governor Lachlan. The city celebrates the Fisher’s Ghost festival each November in the memory of local farmer Frederick Fisher who disappeared from the city and his ghost appeared to point out the site where he was buried.
